Privacy ABC - developing a new educational product
The Privacy Commissioner's office offers free online training. One of the main training modules was Privacy 101, which was a three-hour comprehensive overview of privacy.
We received consistent feedback that Privacy 101 was good for a technical or legal specialist who needed a deep dive, but it was a bit too much for someone who dealt with personal information on a day-to-day basis, such as a receptionist. With this in mind, we set out to reach this important segment by developing a shorter module.
I took the lead on this and created a 30-minute module called "Privacy ABC." This broke 11 relevant components of privacy law into short modules, generally driven by a scenario. Each module gave practical examples to help people quickly engage with what they needed to do in their day-to-day work.
This quickly became our fastest-growing online training module. We launched it in June of 2017, and by the time I left the Commissioner's office in November of that year, more than 1,000 people had signed up for Privacy ABC.
Take a look and update your privacy knowledge! You'll need to create a login, but it's free and I promise it's worth it. You can also see some screenshots of the finished module here:
